Newton's laws of motion, especially the 3rd one “ for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction” is quickly becoming one of my favorite principles.
I found 2 new interpretations of it recently.
The first is one of the points from Farnam Street’s end of year annual review and the second from one the songs from the movie The Sound of Music.
1: Discovering the key to having the world do most of the work for you involves understanding a fundamental principle from Newton.
Isaac Newton’s third law states that, without exception, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
Newton’s law is a powerful algorithm that can help you get what you want, simplify relationships, and improve your life.
Think about it: we often respond to actions with similar reactions. If someone doesn’t help us, we don’t go out of our way to help them in return; conversely, kindness often begets kindness.
To get this powerful force working for you, identify the areas in your life where you are passively waiting for someone to make the first move. It could be an apology, asking someone on a date, or waiting for someone to see your potential.
Stop waiting for life to give you what you think you deserve and go out and make it happen.
Reflect on where you might be passively waiting for others to act. What proactive steps can you take to initiate positive outcomes- Farnam Street Annual Review
2: Something Good from The Sound of Music. I have been playing the soundtracks on repeat this whole week, nostalgic overload. Anyway, while not the song isn’t new, I got a whole new meaning from it.
Perhaps I had a wicked childhood
Perhaps I had a miserable youth
But somewhere in my wicked, miserable past
There must have been a moment of truth
For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
For here you are, standing there, loving me
Whether or not you should
So somewhere in my youth or childhood
I must have done something good
Nothing comes from nothing
Nothing ever could
So somewhere in my youth
Or childhood
I must have done something
Something good
While I’m not 100 percent sure of Maria’s self esteem and why she felt she was undeserving of the “good” captain’s love, nonetheless, nothing comes from nothing translates to without action and there is no reaction.
We have to take action to get the results we want. The way our lives are today is because of previous actions we have taken whether it is in our health & fitness, our jobs , finances and the future we want will depend on the actions we are taking today.
Action precedes reaction. We can’t wait for things to happen, we have to take the necessary actions to increase the likelihood of us getting those reactions.
I hope as the year winds down and we start posturing for the new year, one of the things we should be taking those “actions” no matter how meagre to create the “reactions” we seek in our lives.
Keep going,
Ije
Very good post to read going into 2024! Time to start conditioning my mind to take actions and hope for good reactions 😄
This newton’s law has taught you so many things in life.
